When the idea arose of celebrating the International
Ceramics Biennal of Marratxí we never imagined that the
welcome would be so resounding. There are more than 200 works
from all around the world, with a quality which made selection
of the finalists and winners highly difficult. Although the history
of ceramics is linked to almost all the peoples of the world,
this artistic style is not as extensive as painting or sculpture,
or at least it does not seem to have the same kind of acceptation.
The municipality of Marratxí, which belongs to the island
of Mallorca, has never wished to ignore our origins, and the
idea to organise the Biennial came from this, in order to promote
one of the marks of our identity. Placing value on this form
of artistic expression and the contributing to promote it are
also objectives of the event.
I would like to give my encouragement to all those potters
who have contributed and participated in the Biennial, both
those who took part in the first event as well as those who
did not. We hope that this second International Ceramics Biennal
of Marratxí is at least as enjoyable as the first, and
that we manage to demonstrate the importance of this art to
all those areas where these works have originated.
